About the Sussex Sanctuary Scholarship

The Sussex Sanctuary Scholarship is a fully funded award provided by the University of Sussex to support forced migrants and individuals with temporary immigration status in the UK. This scholarship helps eligible students pursue a Master’s degree by covering tuition and living expenses. Applicants must provide proof of their immigration status to apply.


Eligible Master’s Programs

The scholarship applies to most full-time taught Master’s degrees. However, the following courses are not eligible:

  • Postgraduate Certificates and Diplomas (including PGCE)
  • Courses at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS)
  • Courses at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS)
  • Early Years Education (with Early Years Teacher Status)
  • Degrees in Social Work (if receiving an NHS bursary)
  • Online and distance learning courses
  • School Direct teaching programs
  • Courses funded by research councils (e.g., ESRC 1+3 funding)
  • Programs at partner institutions (e.g., International Study Centre – ISC)

Scholarship Type and Eligibility Criteria

  • Level of Study: Master’s Degree (Taught)
  • Immigration Status: Applicants must be asylum seekers, have discretionary leave to remain, or another form of temporary immigration status
  • Residency: Must currently reside in the United Kingdom
  • Financial Need: Proof of household income required
  • Admission: Must hold an offer for an eligible Master’s course at the University of Sussex

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Full tuition fee waiver (overseas rate)
  • Living stipend of £16,440
  • Free Sussexsport membership

Duration of the Award

The award covers the full duration of the Master’s degree.


Number of Awards

Only three (3) scholarships are available for the 2025 academic year.


How to Apply

Follow these steps to apply for the Sussex Sanctuary Scholarship:

  1. Apply for and accept an offer to study an eligible Master’s program at the University of Sussex.
  2. Complete the scholarship application by 1 June 2025 at 23:59 (UK time).
  3. Submit all required documents, including proof of immigration status, UK residence, household income, and university offer letter.
